3 TIPS TO SOUND MORE NATIVE IN ENGLISH:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do native speakers do in English that non-native speakers have to learn? And are often not taught? I\u2019m going to go through 3 of them right here.<\/p>\n

1:\u00a0\u00a0LINKING:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Native speakers almost never speak word for word.\u00a0We speak in phrases. We link the ending of one word with the start of the next word, especially if they share the same letter. For example, \u2018stop pulling Grace\u2019s scarf’ w<\/em>ould most likely sound like \u2018stopullingracescarf<\/em>\u2019 if a native speaker were to say it. A native speaker would do that naturally and with ease, but a non-native might separate the words as they are focusing on saying each one clearly and naturally. If you speak word for word, it might make you sound like a robot. Who wants to sound like that? Computer says no. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

2:\u00a0\u00a0MUTING:<\/strong>\u00a0Native speakers often mute the D and the T at the end of a word. For example, a native speaker would say \u2018She didn\u2019(t) go to the party las(t)night\u2019. Both the T in \u2018didn\u2019t\u2019 and the T in \u2018last\u2019 would most likely be muted, and the G in \u2018go\u2019 and the N in \u2018night\u2019 are pronounced. For phrases like ‘He didn’t know’ or ‘We couldn’t come’, the T is not pronounced in both ‘didn’t’ and ‘couldn’t. This is not taught at school and one of the key differences between native and non-native speech.<\/p>\n

3:\u00a0SILENCE IS GOLDEN:<\/strong>\u00a0Native speakers know where the silent letters are in words. For example, you say the B in \u2018debit\u2019 but you don\u2019t say the B in \u2018debt\u2019. Crazy, right?\u00a0\u00a0Why is the H silent for \u2018honor\u2019 and \u2018hour\u2019 and \u2018honest\u2019, but not silent in \u2018help\u2019 and \u2018hungry\u2019? And what about \u2018colonel\u2019 and \u2018epitome\u2019? Those are tricky too- we say ‘KER-nil<\/em>‘ and ‘eh-PIT-o-mee<\/em>‘.<\/p>\n
