Here&#8217;s how (and why you need them)!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do native speakers do (and what do many non-native speakers NOT do) when it comes to giving bad news?<\/p>\n<p>They frame it.<\/p>\n<p>Say what?!<\/p>\n<p>They put their message in a frame.<br \/>\nThey package their message in a way to get the most out of that message and increase communication with their counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s say you asked someone to build a website for you.<br \/>\nYou get a mail from them and it says this:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018We have problems with the website.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Is this functional? Yes, you get the point.<\/p>\n<p>But is it professional? Not really.<br \/>\nIf I got this mail I would feel like I had asked the wrong person for the job.<br \/>\nWhy are they not handling this? When will it be fixed?<\/p>\n<p>If you state your message in this way, you are kind of expressing that the problems will never go away. \u2018We have problems\u2019 uses the present simple tense, which is used for things we don\u2019t expect to end or change.<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you how to raise the bar on this one and go from functional to professional.<br \/>\nTry this:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018I\u2019m afraid we are currently experiencing some technical issues with the website.\u2019\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wow. What a difference.<br \/>\nI have used\u00a0<strong>4 different framing approaches<\/strong>\u00a0in that 1 sentence to change the communication game. I\u2019ll break it down for you:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I started with\u00a0<strong>\u2018I\u2019m afraid\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>to let you know bad news is coming. (You can also use \u2018I\u2019m sorry\u2019 or \u2018Unfortunately\u2019 for this as well.)<\/li>\n<li>I used \u2018<strong>currently\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0as a temporary time frame, to show you the negative activity is only for now and will not continue.<\/li>\n<li>I chose the \u2018<strong>ing\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0form of the verb to reinforce this point \u2013 it\u2019s only for now and it will go away. We are working on it as we speak!<\/li>\n<li>I changed \u2018problems\u2019 to \u2018<strong>some technical issues\u2019<\/strong>. I have specified the problem (not only by the amount but also by the type!), which makes it smaller and the problems have now become issues. This is less negative language, but still clear.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I know for many of you this seems totally exaggerated. Why not give it to them straight?<br \/>\nHowever, do keep in mind that English has different ways of packaging our messages.
