Whenever I am there, I\u2019m always struck by the optimism and enthusiasm I see everywhere. (Even on my sunrise walks every morning at 6.15 &#8211; many people were out walking and I was greeted by a \u2018Gooood morning!\u2019 by everyone.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"451\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/buffiduberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Newsletter_12Juni_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buffiduberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Newsletter_12Juni_1.jpg 451w, https:\/\/buffiduberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Newsletter_12Juni_1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/buffiduberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Newsletter_12Juni_1-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Europeans tell me all the time that they experience this as fake, especially in restaurants.<br>\u2018Why did the waitress come and introduce herself? It\u2019s not like I want to be friends with her!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that not everyone realizes is that the minimum wage for restaurant workers is lower (much lower!) than the \u2018normal,\u2019 (and still shockingly low!) minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was a waitress, I got paid 2 dollars and 8 cents an hour. Yes, you read that right. I could maybe afford a cup of coffee after working for an hour. That tip which you (hopefully!) leave before you go is NOT an extra in the States. Not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the missing half of someone\u2019s wages. So of course they will introduce themselves, be nice and friendly, and keep checking in on you to make sure you are enjoying your meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Times have changed slightly since then, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/state\/minimum-wage\/tipped#:~:text=For%20employees%20of%20employers%20with,wage%20is%20%247.25%20per%20hour.\">the minimum wage has increased<\/a>, but in Delaware, it\u2019s a whopping 2 dollars and 23 cents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about that for a second the next time you\u2019re in a restaurant.<br>That \u2018fake\u2019 enthusiasm is there for a reason. (And, to be honest, many times it\u2019s not fake at all. I truly was excited to help every table, and I loved being a waitress. Many people do!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip your wait staff well. Very well. It\u2019s greatly appreciated.<br>That\u2019s a tip from me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let\u2019s hear it for my \u2018small side salad\u2019.
