It\u2019s all about the different possibilities of using the verb \u2018to look\u2019 \u2013 if you change the preposition, you change the meaning of the verb! Hope this helps straighten you out, so that you won\u2019t give me a heart attack by saying \u2018I\u2019m looking for my children this weekend\u2019!<\/p>\n

WHAT\u2019S UP IN BUFFILAND<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, so much. I corrected waaaaay too many exams, made a cake for Tim Knol, who made me cry during his show (he always does, but don\u2019t tell him that) when he sang the song we wrote together \u2013 \u2018Sea of Shame\u2019 – number 6 on his new album. Sigh. I also worked with some fabulous CEO\u2019s in my in-company Business English course in Amersfoort, had my first chair massage (wow!) at the Design Academy Eindhoven, burned my finger and made courgette spaghetti. Yum!<\/p>\n

YOUR QUESTIONS \u2013 ANSWERED!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBuffi, why can\u2019t I start a sentence with \u2018Please\u2019 if I want to be polite? Someone said that I was actually being rude. I didn\u2019t mean to be \u2013 help me out!\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 from N, during a lesson.<\/p>\n

I know what you mean, N (which should stand for \u2018Nice\u2019 because you are such a nice person and don\u2019t have a rude bone in your body). You probably thought that if you start with \u2018Please\u2019 it sounds more polite. However, it actually sounds like you are annoyed, frustrated, or irritated if you start with this word. We\u2019d usually say something like \u2018Could you help me, please?\u2019 the first time (or even \u2018Would you help me, please?\u2019 if you want to be even more formal\/polite). If that doesn\u2019t work, then you could try \u2018Could you please help me?\u2019, which is a bit more direct, and then the third time you have to ask, you could say \u2018Please could you help me?\u2019. This sounds quite desperate and should only be used when the other 2 attempts didn\u2019t work! I made a video about this recently,\u00a0check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
