When someone says \u201cI want to work on my English pronunciation, I usually say \u201cWhich one?\u201d and then show them\u00a0this<\/a>. And this one is just on British accents.\u00a0Klik hier<\/a>\u00a0for one about American accents \u2013 and more!<\/p>\n

Ok, and while we\u2019re at it\u2026.how about\u00a0this classic<\/a>\u00a0on the difference between American and British slang \u2013 you might pick up a new phrase or two…\u00a0I could go on for hours (oops! I mean pages) about the difference in accents, but I\u2019d like to give you a very (very) brief (stop! Think of 2 other words that mean the same as \u2018brief\u2019! Did you say \u2018short\u2019, and \u2018concise\u2019? Well done!)<\/em>\u00a0overview of some of the major differences between US and UK English when it comes to spelling and grammar. Because I am a grammar goddess, yo.<\/p>\n

Here we go:<\/p>\n

  1. Spelling<\/strong>: Many British words end in \u2018our\u2019 and in the States we end them in \u2018or\u2019. Colour\/color, labour\/ labor, harbour, harbor, you get the picture. Brits write \u2018litre\u2019, \u2018theatre\u2019, and \u2018centre\u2019 and Americans write \u2018liter\u2019, \u2018theater\u2019, \u2018center\u2019. But \u2018acre\u2019, \u2018mediocre\u2019\u00a0(when was the last time you used this word? Such a great word!)<\/em>\u00a0and \u2018massacre\u2019 are spelled that way on both sides of the pond. The Brits realise they are organised, while Americans realize they are organized. So. Much. Fun.<\/li>\n
  2. Grammar<\/strong>: A British person would most likely use the Present Perfect when describing the present results of something. For example \u2018Oh, you\u2019ve cut your hair!\u2019. An American would tend to use the Past Simple for this \u2013 \u2018Oh, you cut your hair!\u2019 With the words \u2018just\u2019, \u2018already\u2019 and \u2018yet\u2019, an American would most likely use the Past Simple and a Brit the Present Perfect. For example, an American would say \u201cI already ate breakfast\u201d, while a British person might say \u201cI\u2019ve already eaten breakfast,\u201d and \u201cHave you called her yet?\u201d sounds more British, whereas \u201cDid you call her yet?\u201d sounds more American.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This is just the teeny tiny tip of the iceberg when it comes to some of the differences between British and American English. More will come in future posts if you find that helpful (just hit the \u2018reply\u2019 button!). Many are also explained in Rock Your English!<\/p>\n

    Oh, and one more thing before I go (doing my Columbo glance over my shoulder) \u2013 please\u00a0(please! Learn from my mistakes- this really happened to me!)\u00a0remember that the next time a 70- year old British woman asks you if she can \u2018borrow your rubber\u2019 and that she will \u2018give it right back to you when we are done\u2019, she is NOT talking about a condom, but an ERASER. AN ERASER. Now go wash your mind.<\/p>\n
