\nI just wanted to check in and see if you survived the holidays. Did you eat enough? Drink enough wine? Hear enough lame jokes? (I can say ‘OH YES’ to all of the above!)<\/p>\n

What do you call a cheese that is not yours?
\n(Wait for it…)
\nNacho cheese!!!<\/p>\n

(I said it was lame. Don’t shoot the messenger!)<\/p>\n

I hope you’re having a\u00a0wonderful time and relaxing with friends\u00a0and family (or drunk colleagues).<\/p>\n

Ok, let’s get down to business.
\nOne of my biggest passions is helping you feel awesome in English. So don’t let this happen to you….<\/p>\n

You\u2019re talking to your British colleague, and you have to break the bad news gently. You say \u201cwe have problems with our management team.\u201d To you, this might seem like a \u2018good\u2019 sentence in English. However, you might not realize that this strikes the wrong tone when you\u2019re giving bad news in English.<\/p>\n

HUH?
\nLet me explain. If you say \u2018we have problems\u2019 this means that you have problems all the time. The problems are permanent. They will not go away. You\u2019ve used the present simple tense \u2018we have\u2019, which is used for permanent situations, or things that we don\u2019t expect to change or end.<\/p>\n

How could you have said this better? Something like \u2018We are having problems with our management team\u2019, or even better \u2018We are currently having some problems with our management team\u2019. This tells me that the problems will go away. They are temporary. You\u2019ve used the present progressive form- \u2018we are having\u2019, which is used for actions that will not continue. And this is how you give bad news in English professionally.<\/p>\n

Do you see how changing one grammar form can completely change your message? You might have given someone the wrong impression without realizing it. This can lead to serious miscommunication problems in English.<\/p>\n
