\nDon’t do what I did.
\nOnce, when I was studying at Cambridge, I asked a friend (a BRITISH FRIEND) to check and see if ‘I had a hole in my pants’.
\nI stood up, turned around, and bent over.
\nWe had been sitting on a rough, wooden park bench and I thought I had ripped a tiny hole in my pants.
\nHe laughed.
\nI laughed too, but I didn’t know why it was so funny.
\nAnd then he explained that ‘pants’ in the UK means ‘underwear’.
\nI did NOT want him to check my undies!!
\nI felt so stupid.
\nAnd this happened at CAMBRIDGE, which is full of SMART PEOPLE!<\/p>\n
Here are a few simple things you should know about the difference between British and American English:<\/p>\n
SPELLING:
\nBritish: colour, honour, labour, centre, analyse, criticise
\nAmerican: color, honor, labor, center, analyze, criticize<\/p>\n
VOCABULARY:<\/p>\n
British: the boot of a car, pants, vest, loo, to let, chips
\nAmerican: the trunk of a car, underwear, (DUH!), undershirt, bathroom, to rent, (French) fries<\/p>\n
GRAMMAR:<\/p>\n
British: Have you got…?
\nAmerican: Do you have…?<\/p>\n
British: I’ve just finished!
\nAmerican: I just finished!<\/p>\n
British: I haven’t done it yet.
\nAmerican: I didn’t do it yet.<\/p>\n
British: I dreamt about it last night.
\nAmerican: I dreamed about it last night.<\/p>\n
