This is me mad.<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t happen a lot, so what happened today really took me by surprise.<\/p>\n

The next picture shows me (ok, my shoe!) waiting in a big room full of very nervous teenagers who were about to take their Cambridge English Speaking Exam.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I was there with my son. He\u2019s bilingual. No problem.<\/p>\n

Right when I arrived it started.
\n\u2018What level is he here for?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

What level?
\nI\u2019ve never thought about him in levels.<\/p>\n

\u2018I have no idea!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Um\u2026but you\u2019re this famous English coach – you don\u2019t know what level your son is at?\u2019<\/p>\n

Nope.
\nAnd I never will.<\/p>\n

Because you can\u2019t put a number on communication.<\/p>\n

I looked around and observed the energy of the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

So many kids were deeply nervous.<\/p>\n

And you know what?<\/p>\n

Many were probably fluent in English.<\/p>\n

Some might be bilingual.<\/p>\n

My son is native level.<\/p>\n

But guess what?<\/p>\n

When you feel observed, judged, or evaluated, something shifts in your mind.<\/p>\n

Some people stutter.<\/p>\n

Some black out.<\/p>\n

Some feel very small – like a failure.<\/p>\n

To me, a test is a snapshot of that moment.<\/p>\n

Nothing else.<\/p>\n

I left standard education because I refuse to put a number on people. Especially children. I was so busy filling in forms and testing to test that it took precious time and energy away from teaching real communication and life skills. So I walked away and started something new.<\/p>\n

I know I\u2019m in a luxury position as I now only play by my own rules and have complete freedom to do so. And I know many teachers feel the same way but are \u2018forced\u2019 or \u2018trapped\u2019 in the system.<\/p>\n

I get it.<\/p>\n

But I will always refuse to put a number on communication.<\/p>\n

I give all the kids today a 10.
\nI give them a 3\/7.
\nI give them a 123,456,789.
\nI give them 8.346.
\nI give them 2435987209487235.<\/p>\n

Now they’ve got their numbers.
\nHave they met the requirements now?<\/p>\n
