3 simple hacks for public speaking

They really work!

I was deeply honored to host the Best Workplaces for Women Awards recently. I was asked by Great Place to Work to present, inspire, keep the positive vibe going, and announce 40 different awards!

It was a delight to do, and so wonderful to see so many companies working hard to make the gender and wage gap shrink when it comes to workplace culture. Their important work and enormous progress was center stage.

People told me afterwards that I was so natural on stage.

‘I could never do what you do – I get too nervous!’ they said.

Here are a few tips to help you when you have to speak in public:

  1. Know that speaking up is also showing up. For yourself. Daring to share your message. And stand in the (spot) light. It’s not just a business skill, it’s a LIFE skill that will serve you well both personally and professionally.
  2.  If you focus on fear, it grows. If you focus on joy, gratitude, and excitement, that grows too. Your body has the same physiological reaction to fear and excitement – shaking hands, perspiration, dry mouth…whether you’re about to get married, or have a job interview. Your body reacts the same. So tell yourself that you are EXCITED, not nervous. It really helps!
  3. WIGGLE YOUR TOES. Sounds crazy but it’s true! (This is also a chapter in my newest book…). If you are too much in your head, overthinking, judging, getting doubtful, you lose connection to your body. This means you breathe higher, and actually get MORE nervous. Wiggling your toes will immediately snap you back into your body. You will feel the ground underneath you which will….ground you and help you feel more balanced.

Keep these in mind the next time you stand in the (spot) light!

Never forget to shine – we need your light now more than ever!

Liefs,

Buffi
