There’s this woman I hate.
And if you know me, you know that ‘hate’ is not a word I use often.
But I really hate this person.
She shows up at the worst times.
She’s never invited.
She never wants to leave.
Who is this horrible stranger?
Well….she’s not a stranger at all.
She’s me.
Buffi.
But…she’s Judge Buffi.
The minute I start speaking Dutch, she shows up.
She also arrives on the scene when I’m speaking French, Spanish, or Czech.
(She has to show up really really fast sometimes because I only remember a few sentences in Czech but after 1 word OMG-THERE SHE IS.)
She’s judging me, evaluating me, telling me I sound ridiculous.
Oh, and she’s famous too.
She’s appeared with me on national TV a few times, actually.
Judge Buffi showed up when I was on the DWDD show.
I could not find the right word and over a million people watched me mentally wrestle with Judge Buffi on live TV.
To this day, I still can’t tell you who won.
You see….if you are not sure what you’re good at and what you’re not good at, you just assume you SUCK at EVERYTHING. Nothing’s right. And you’re so blinded by this, spiraling into shame, that you truly have no idea that you might actually be doing things right. Judge You won’t let you see that.
This is why we are all on the same team.
Why I have such deep empathy and love for my clients who struggle with English.
Because I know very well, too well, what it’s like to have the Judge come up and say hi (or ‘you SUCK’) at the most inopportune times.
