Let’s talk about the elephant in the womb.

The elephant in the womb.

Let’s talk about it.

And keep talking about it, and sharing the importance of a woman’s fundamental right to control what happens inside her own body.

From 1986-1990, I worked as a clinic escort for 3 years, a fundraiser for NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) for 2 summers, and was on staff at a Planned Parenthood clinic itself for 2 years as an administrator, counsellor, and aide. I would still be working or volunteering at Planned Parenthood if I had stayed in NY.

While working in the clinic I did many pre-procedure interviews. Several of my clients were girls between 14 and 16 who were raped by a family member. They were terrified, traumatised, but grateful that there was support that was local, safe, and affordable.

Safe and legal abortions absolutely saved their lives. They could stay at school and regain some sense of control over their shattered bodies and souls.

What do we tell those girls today?

The abortion underground will return, and people will have to leave (and lose!) their jobs in order to travel thousands of miles in order to find a legal and safe abortion. This is not to be taken lightly.

Other court cases will be examined soon, at the Supreme Court level. One is on contraception, one is on same-sex marriages, and one is on granting a fetus ‘personhood’. It’s a very scary slippery slope we have been forced to deal with.

“The basic thing is that the government has no business making that choice [to get an abortion or not] for a woman.” – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I miss you now more than ever.

I’ll get back to fun and inspiring tips and tricks next week, but this is an issue so close to my heart I had to share it with you all today. I’m too honest to pretend that things are ok when they are not. I hope you understand. Thanks for reading!

Liefs,
Buffi
