Last week I had my live presentation day for my Great in 8 coaching members. I had been working with these highly motivated, fluent speakers for a month already on their grammar, pronunciation style, tone, and vocabulary enhancement, and now, halfway through our Communication Coaching program, we had a live masterclass day! #ShowWhatYouKnow! Everyone had to prepare, with coaching, a 20-minute presentation. Not an easy task, right? Especially when your English coach is in the audience.
But magic happened that day!
Lieske sat for 16 hours (with a mask on!) on the train from Sweden just to come and learn with me for the day, and she went back the next day. This is what she said:
‘The Great in 8 Program felt like reinventing my English. For the first time, I actually received genuine feedback on very common mistakes. But I’d like to share 1 important tip with you that I shared with these amazing ladies last week.
And it’s this….
The next time you have to do something that you feel nervous about, you might have the tendency to say ‘I’m so nervous!’
This is completely natural.
Being nervous means that you CARE.
It means that you are about to do something that matters to you.
But change one word in your head.
Change ‘nervous‘ to ‘excited‘ and see what happens.
Try saying something like this….
‘I’m so excited! I get the chance to speak in front of this amazing group and share my insights, knowledge, passion and expertise! Lucky me! And lucky THEM, for getting the chance to hear my story! Let’s GO!’
Hook into gratitude and passion.
Let it sink in.
This ia a wonderful opportunity and YOU get to do it!
If you change your self-talk, your body will start believing it. Communication starts in your head. The way you talk to yourself is the lens through which you see the world. Maybe you don’t believe it at first, but the more attention and focus you put on gratitude (grateful for the opportunity AND grateful for your audience), the more it will grow, and the fear will become less. The more you believe in yourself, the less time and energy you have to focus on the negative.
